About Us

International Women’s Day originated in the first decade of the twentieth century in US, where women made history by marching for equality. Out of this was born the first National Women’s Day held on 28th February 1909.

The movement reached Europe the following year. Several rallies were held to demand the right to vote.

The movement spread further afield to Russia in 1913, Britain in 1926 and Australia in 1928.

International Women’s Day on 8th March is recognised by the United Nations. On this day women of all continents acknowledge their struggles and celebrate their achievements and take stock of what needs to be done.

In Coventry the festival is co-ordinated by a group of dedicated volunteers representing a range of organisations and interests throughout the city. A diverse and focused festival programme is produced catering for the needs of women in our multi-cultural city. We celebrate the women of Coventry on their achievements and contributions and wish them success in every endeavour.

Coventry Women's Festival 2008 acknowledges the support of everyone involved.
